Miers Opinion Piece

Here is a good link to why Harriet Miers' nomination should be reconsidered. It's very thoughtful and best explains my consternation.

That is a good article. I disagree with his point that Meirs has not even played on the level of a high school team. Being White House counsel would certainly expose her to many of the issues he addresses. White House counsel doesn't simply exist to defend the President in legal matters, but to also advise in legal matters. Surely when Bush proposes laws - many of which would affect the issues the article raises - she would have expressed not simply a personal opinion, but a legal one.

Nevertheless, the point of the article is well taken and certainly valid. I can't say that I would disagree with her being rejected solely on the basis of her connections with the President.

It's funny (in a non-funny kind of way) that Bush apparently felt none of the inhibitions that Hamilton expressed - though he should have.

I honestly didn't follow the Senate proceedings for justice Roberts, but the article's description of the way the Senate operates is equally disturbing. What we don't need are windbags pontificating their own opinions, but solid - even hard - questions that shed light on the candidate's judicial philosophy. This isn't traffic court, after all. I'm just afraid she will be confirmed after a round of Senator's giving speeches and then simply deciding what to do based on their preconceived biases anyway.
